It was a dire situation. We at the KC Social needed a location to drink and podcast from. We also needed shelf space for beer and equipment. Management (wife) gave the OK to add a bar to the basement. We began to plot a course of action by Google searching bars for inspiration. We came across this website DIY Done Right, sponsored by the fastener company Simpson Strong-Tie. College interns in the Strong-Tie engineering department came up with this wicked set of plans:
“We designed the frame to allow for maximum use of the space by including a two-level bar top, two massive shelves spanning the length of the bar and a cutout for a mini-fridge (or a sink if you decide to take on the plumbing challenge).”- Simpson Strong-Tie Interns
We Loved it!
Here is how we created our new favorite hangout:
Order the Materials and Make the Cuts
We penciled in the cut lengths
Get proper tools/fasteners and start building
More Building…
The finished version from the Strong-Tie Website looks like this:
We added 10 outlets (podcast baby)! Then we stained the bar top with MINWAX wood stain Gunstock 231 and the bar with Golden Oak 210B.
We covered the bar in 3 Coats of Polyurethane. The bar top needs to be rubbed out with steel wool and furniture paste wax. Here is an excellent tutorial:
Rub it Out! (there is a joke in there somewhere)
Finishing touches like a bottle opener and footrest make it kickass.
Our bar and footrest are fastened to the concrete with Tapcon screws. Holla at your boys!
